Post 11 Brand personalities

Before we discussed in class regarding the types of stigmas that are attached to certain brands, i never realized how weird it would be for the coke-cola brand to release a fruity healthy drink when they are known for their coke. Then it made me think about every brand that i use constantly such as Apple, Nike, Vans, Coca-cola, Simply, etc. If Apple started releasing food related products would i buy it from them? Most likely not because i know they are known for electronics and technology. Same goes with Nike: if all of a sudden they wanted to start selling drinks i do not think i would be interested in it because of the better products that are out there.

These personalities that become attached to a brand takes time for it to happen. Such as Coke cola is known for sugary carbonated beverages and how nike is known for active fitness clothing. Each brand usually specializes a certain area that they become known for. There are cases where brands try to rebrand themselves but it sometimes backfires because the customers become confused and get angry at the company.

This site gives a few good examples of companies trying to rebrand themselves and not working out.

Post 10 The psych of advertising

Since the last blog was about consumer motivation i did a whole lot of research on what causes the human mind to want something whether or not it is a need and i discovered a whole subsection of advertising, the psychology of consumer appeal.

Many tactics that advertising companies use are emotional appeal, fixing a person's flaws, aiming the ad to make it feel unique to you, and many other ways. One of the strongest tactics i've read about was the focus on "me" when advertising companies were figuring out ways to appeal to consumers. They had neurologists to run tests on individuals to find types of ads affect the human brain the most and came to the conclusion that when you put the individual to picture him or herself in the ad it makes it more appealing. The sense of being that person portrayed on TV makes the brain believe you want to be like that and will buy whatever necessary to be like that. Examples would be like

This ad puts you in first person and submerges you into the ad making you feel like you're that person which then causes you're brain to want to be that.

Post 9 Consumer motivations

Being a psychology major I am alway interested in what motivates consumers to buy and what attracts individuals to certain items. There are many aspects that attracts consumers such as looks, technology, hype, costs, etc. It peeks my interests that many people like to be unique and to stand out. Now it's understandable that as individuals they like to have their own sense of worth and not to be blended with others, however the extent some will take that is fascinating. Some consumers may spend as high as 800-1000 dollars for a brand new Iphone when there are phones that are much cheaper than that and will have a similar performance.

This article gives some insight on why consumers would choose to want to buy expensive products over similar, but cheaper products. It basically says that the act of buying something expensive despite the object increases happiness in the individual because of the experience, however overtime the object will reveal itself to be just like any other object.

Also this Ted talks gives a great explanation to what marketers use to motivate consumers.

Essentially it is saying that companies use their knowledge of how the human brain works to make consumers want their product through the use of specific advertising that makes the consumer sub cautiously want it.

Post 8 Windows 8 launch

One of the biggest launches for windows was their new OS windows 8. For Pc consumers, this was a huge step towards a more simplistic and better viewing OS. It was hugely exciting for pc users and everyone was expecting it to be huge, but no one was ready for what it actually was. When the Os was finally released the majority of the windows users could say it was horrible. Everything was changed, no one understood how to use the controls. Even just finding the shut down button was hard enough that many coders made loopholes for easier access to the keys.

Other key notes that many were not a fan of was the app system. Since many consumers did not have touch screens, the app home screen was essentially harder to use and many apps that came pre-installed had no options and you were stuck with whatever the defaults were.

Thankfully Microsoft saw their mistake and immediately sent out a Windows 8.1 update which many would call it 8.2 which improved many disliked options and increased popularity. However there were still many that disliked the new OS and were already looking forward to next years.

In the time it took windows 8 to sell 200 million license(15-plus months) windows 7 sold 240million in the first 12 months.

Post 7 Meatless mondays

Earth Day network is a company is that is pushing for "Meatless Mondays" campaign which fights to lower the meat consumption because over the past 50 years the consumption of meat has increased significantly with the population rise. With the rise of meat consumption, more water is needed and corn that is used up to make that meat. This company also pushes for other acts of green such as saving water, helping students in need, planting trees, and much more.

The way Earth Day network is spreading there campaign is through social media such as facebook, blogger, youtube, twitter, pintrest and flickr. Because of how big social media is today and how many people integrate it into their daily lives. Especially since the majority of the younger generation is very heavily focused on the internet, this is one of the best ways to get fast and major attention from a large population. Many would be surprised how fast word can spread through the world wide web. Ever heard of viral videos? These types of videos generally start at a low view count and skyrocket to millions of views within a week due to how much people share it. if the information is interesting and quick to the point, more individuals will be more likely to share it with friends.

Post 6 Gender stereotyping

I believe gender stereotyping is an interesting issue surrounding advertising and media in general. One ideal i see in advertising presently is the gender stereotyping towards children. Young children should not be shown commercials that cause them to think a certain type of way, they should be able to develop their own choices.

For example look at this youtube video:

This video is a collection of gendered ads aimed at children. In the first ad alone, you see wolverine claws presented by a bunch of boys. No girls whatsoever. What if a certain girl was a big fan of wolverine but saw the ad and felt it was only for boys, therefore she steered away from wolverine. This is just one of the many ads that are preventing children from being free to do what they like without being biased. Many ads focus on boys being the superheroes, job workers, adventurous life styles while the girls have more at home toys aimed towards them like cooking, cleaning, taking care of the baby and etc.
